About my art…

I create  artwork with using Japanese washi paper and fablic
My subjects are usually kanji or animals. The process for the creation of my art is technically simple part but sometimes leads me to the final creation.  With that, the technical process and the creative process become entwined resulting in a sum that is more than the individual parts. With the understanding that the basic technical process leaves many opportunities for creativity is a given, the process starts like the silk screen plate making process, where the ink is built up in layers of separate colors, with a plate for each color.  In a similar layering manner, I cut the yuzen paper as a color pattern of the design and then a black paper is cut to form an outline of the design that are then combined onto a backer matrix of simple cardboard(shikishi)with sikishi glue. I continue to experiment with new papers and fablic to evolve my process.  The results of each design is greatly affected by the section of the yuzen papers and the combining of their individual patterns and how they compliment and contrast each other setting up tension and release or simplicity or complexity in their juxtapositions.   Each design is handmade and unique and so I look upon them as a part of me.  Each piece is then stamped with my stone mark as my personal signature of authentication.

                                                                Washi…
Washi is a type of paper made in Japan, made using fibers from the bark of Plants like paper mulberry, paperbush and hemp. These plants grow in fields and There before  forests and not cut down to make washi. The word washi comes from wa meaning Japanese and Shi meaning paper, and the term is used to describe paper made by hand in the traditionalmanner. Washi was developed from the traditional Chinese paper-making process. Washi is generally tougher and softer than ordinary paper made from wood pulp, and is used in many traditional arts. Origami, shodo, and ukiyo-e were all produced using washi. Because most Washi is ph-balanced it lasts much longer than nomal paper. There are examples of  Washi that that more than 1,000-year-old. Machine-made paper lasts only about 100 years, due to te acidic used in making it.
The kind of paper I use in my artwork is Yuzen washi, dyed with coloful patterns by kimono dyers of Kyoto.

                                                                 Kanji
Kanji are Chinese characters used in Japanese writing. Adopted by the Japanese thousands of years ago , Kanji are an intrinsic part of Japanese culture, and writing of kanji is an art from practiced by many Japanese people. (shodo) Each character represents an idea or concept.. in my washi art gallery I have included explanations of the meanings of the Kanji characters I use.
